Orthodontics is a sector of dentistry involving treatment of misaligned teeth and facial development using a variety of methods. Patients of all ages can benefit from orthodontic treatment. After an initial exam and consultation, Dr. Peter Chapman, DDS, MSD will make recommendations as the most appropriate treatment for your unique situation.

Listed below are several treatment methods commonly used for orthodontic care:

Clear Braces

Clear braces are a translucent, tooth-colored material. They are most popular with the adult patients. They are difficult to see on the teeth unless you are very close to the patient. The only draw back to the bracket is that they are more fragile and the elastic ties can discolor between orthodontic visits.

Invisalign

A new system available for adults for orthodontic correction of some bite problems. The Invisalign™ System is a series of clear overlay aligners that have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth. Dr. Chapman is an Invisalign™ Certified Orthodontist.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most common. They are made of high-grade stainless steel. Today’s braces are much smaller and more comfortable. Therefore they are much more attractive. Most of the patients like to dress up the braces with different color elastics that can be changed at each appointment. Multiple colors are available.

Retainers

Retainers are generally worn after removal of active orthodontic appliances. We will monitor retention for a period of 12-18 months, then patients are dismissed. Appointments can be scheduled after dismissal if needed (an appointment fee will be charged). Also, Some minor orthodontic problems can be corrected with retainers. Retainers can be used on the upper and/or lower teeth.

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces offer several benefits for patients. They use a self-ligation technique using lighter wires and lower friction brackets to move teeth while resulting in faster treatment times due to its slide mechanism, strong, mechanical base bonding, and solid walls structured to control tooth movement with speed and efficiency. In addition to greater comfort, self-ligating braces make it easier to maintain good hygiene because they are easier to keep clean. This contributes to greater health, happiness, and physical attractiveness for the duration of patient treatment.
